The novella revolves around this unhappy love story because the narrator considers it to be the string of events that are the most illustrative of his superfluous existence. Alienation is a universal literary theme ever since the beginning of Modernism and Turgenev succeeds in depicting alienation in a truly humane, colorful manner. The Diary of a Superfluous Man is by no means a happy story, but it is certainly a story that depicts the modern attitude towards life.
